Emerald Flame

His hanging lamp, known as a fanous muʿtamman (eight-sided lantern), is a striking fusion of pierced brasswork and colored glass, designed to transform light into ornament. Its structure balances geometry and radiance, presenting the lamp as both a vessel for illumination and a proclamation of artistry.

Calligraphic Inscriptions
The pierced brass band is worked in the Mamluk tradition, its surface alive with flowing arabesques and scrolling vines. Interspersed along the panels are Arabic inscriptions rendered in elegant script, invoking blessings of light and divine protection.

Artistic Details

  • Octagonal Frame: The body is formed from an eight-sided brass band, each face pierced with interlacing motifs. Its crown of serrated edges gives the lamp a fortress-like silhouette.
  • Suspension Chains: Heavy chains, adorned with spherical beads, carry the lantern, commanding presence from above like a jewel suspended in the air.
  • Colored Glass Capsules: Green and amber glass vessels descend around the inverted dome, each cupped within finely cut brass collars. When lit with candles or oil, they would scatter jewel-like pools of color through the latticework.
  • Inverted Dome: At the heart of the design, an inverted brass dome is surrounded by the glass lamps, its pierced floral motifs allowing light to filter downward with delicate intricacy.
  • Patina & Glow: The interplay of aged yellow brass with the brilliance of glass creates a dual texture: the enduring weight of metal and the fleeting glow of flame.

Interpretation
This lamp is both sacred and domestic in function. Its octagonal form (muʿtamman) reflects stability and cosmic order, while the arabesque inscriptions and colored glass transform fire into divine radiance. Suspended high, it embodies both utility and symbol: a fan that protects, illuminates, and elevates the space it inhabits.
