Lamp of the Seven Winds

This hanging lantern evokes the sanctity of a Fatimid sanctuary, where geometry, foliage, and light are bound into one harmonious design. Its spherical body of hand-pierced bronze bears the mellow patina of age, every surface alive with lattices of vines and palmettes that echo the Fatimid garden of paradise. It is both vessel and memory, an artifact shaped to transform fire into constellations of color and shadow.

Calligraphic & Decorative Inscriptions
While lacking an extended script, the lantern speaks through ornament: hand-pierced arabesques in the Fatimid tradition, vines and palmettes repeating in rhythmic flow. The pierced crown and zigzag borders mirror architectural motifs of minarets, lending it both a sacred and protective aura.

Artistic Details

  • Spherical Form: The body is fully rounded, pierced with vegetal tracery, creating a woven garden of light and shadow.
  • Beaded Midsection: A girdle of beading encircles the center, dividing the design with a band of ornament and structure.
  • Crown Neck: The upper section rises in a pierced crown, edged with triangular vents and zigzag motifs that recall the silhouette of a Fatimid minaret.
  • Glass Cabochons: Inlays of turquoise and cloudy white glass, irregular and bubble-filled, are set across the body. These gems glow like drops of water or stars when illuminated.
  • Light Effect: Once lit with a candle, the glass fragments refract emerald and turquoise hues through the tracery, scattering foliage-like constellations across the surrounding walls.
  • Aged Surface: Cracks, oxidized seams, and softened edges testify to centuries of use, giving the lantern both dignity and lived presence.

Interpretation
This lantern is not only a device for light but a cosmological vessel. Its Fatimid-style foliage, pierced bronze body, and emerald-glass effects render illumination into a spiritual act: fire turned into garden, star, and sanctuary. It embodies both memory and continuity, an artifact carrying light and the aura of devotion across generations.
